Fishing Report May 27

Offshore fishing has been erratic with catches of sailfish, kingfish and large hammerhead sharks caught in depths from 65 feet out to 110 feet of water off Fort Lauderdale. The Mahi have started to move in and with lots of schoolie fish in big schools are to be had. Also some blackfin tunas and bonitos have been in the area. The patch reefs off of Key Biscayne over 50foot bottom fish using live pilchards has been hot. The catch included mutton snappers to 7 pounds, black, gag and red groupers to 10 pounds, yellowtail and mangrove snappers, cero mackerel and large porgies.

Tarpon are biting at Government Cut and Port Everglades, most tarpon caught are in the  70-100 pounds range and live shrimp has been the best bait. The outgoing tides have produced the best results. Schools of pilchards can be caught in the intercostals and around the inlets. Snook also have been solid in these same areas. Also a few Bonefish have been caught new Port Everglades lately.

Northern Biscayne Bay

Sea trout have been eating lures tipped with a shrimp or Gulp plastics over the grass flats. Live pilchards fished under a float seem to do the trick on the larger sea trout. Mangrove snappers, barracudas, a few pompano, ladyfish, bull sharks and some tarpon can be found over many of the grass flats . Snook and tarpon have also been consistent to throughout this area’s bridges and docks.

Tarpon continue to be HOT! in and around the inlets. Best baits have been live pilchards, silver mullet and blue crabs.

South Biscayne Bay

Tarpon are still be hot on the Oceanside flats from Key Biscayne to the upper Keys. Cast small blue crabs, live pilchards, mullet seem to do the trick for them. Snook have been available on the mainland side of South Biscayne Bay where there are creeks that go inland and at the mouths of many of the canals on the outgoing tides. Look for bonefish and permits to be available on the last of the outgoing and the first of the incoming tides early and late in the day over the shallow grass on the mainland side and around the islands in South Biscayne Bay.

Quick Notes for the Keys

Redfish and trout are thick in the Back Country.

A few very large day time Swordfish have been caught out of Bud n Marys.

Night time Yellow tail fishing has been very productive.

Thursday Morning

Knee high SE wind chop. There are a couple thigh to waist high sets.

There might be some rideable waves Sunday and  Monday if the marine forecast holds.
