Day 3: Into the Blue.

Day 3: Into the Blue.

Reef life.

Reef life.

As I woke this morning my toes were crossed for good conditions and blue skies!  I made it to the dock before sunrise, loaded up the Whaler and headed to fill it up with gas.

I headed North to a reef nestled between the offshore reefs and an island pass.  Explored the reef for a couple hours and then moved north again.  It teemed with life and was closely guarded by a couple large barracudas.  Stumbled upon a juvenile Green Sea Turtle whom kept his distance.

The weather was great minus the choppy onshore conditions most of the day with clear skies.  I explored without seeing another person or boat all day.  Its fully off season around this area in the heat of the summer.  I explored another favorite area of mine off an island where the shallows seem to go on and on.  Shooting with different lenses and housing ports above and below the surface exploring the entire area before heading back south around 1245pm.  The water color and clarity makes creating images even more challenging at times, with all my options.  I headed back to home base and was fairly satisfied with todays journey.  I did some promo work for and finished up editing the images after a nice dinner with the locals.  At times I have to listen very carefully with their thick accent (not to mention I’m nearly deaf in my right ear).

Day 2: Swimming with the stars

Day 2:  Swimming with the stars

After nearly getting cabin fever for over 24 hrs I ventured out in the cloudy / partial rainy conditions on the bike.  Exploring the island from end and settling back to one of my favorite spots to shoot in the water.  Heavy clouds was not what I expected but that is also what is so great about mother nature.  Sometimes the unexpected adventures in life can bring upon new ideas and experiences.

After a quick run to the the grocery store with Amelia, I ventured out onto the flats exploring with my Camera.  This time it is a Canon 1dx with a Canon 8-15mm Fisheye lens inside an Aquatech Delphin housing with an 8 inch dome.  The light was flat but that also meant I could use a slow shutter speed.  Finally came across my favorite marine invertebrates!  Cushion stars.

Because the lighting was so bad I had to get creative.  As I lay my entire body on the bottom (with no rash guard on) to shoot a starfish’s perspective.  Little did I know the sea grass was covered in sea lice or some sort of jellyfish.  My chest and neck was on fire!  I had emerged myself in them.  That was my exit point out of the water.  Usually I always wear rash guards for sun protection, but since it was so cloudy I had just put sunblock on and swam out.  I rode back to my home base after a few stops for landscape shots, that were’t successful.  As the evening started the sun just barely starting peaking out from behind the clouds like the night before and I rushed off to try and capture the opportunity somewhere.

Headed back in the dark this time on the golf cart.  Cruising along the sandy cart path the salt breeze was a nice end to the day of mostly sitting inside and catching up on commercial projects.  Tomorrow I hope for some sunny skies to light up the underwater world!

Day 1 Flying into Eastern Bahamian thunderstorms.

BRC_4710NarrowsBahamas2014

Day 1 Eastern Bahamas:

Today started out like any other day, except for a few things.  I woke to a throbbing neck from sleeping on my side trying to avoid contact of my jaw.  Why?  The day before I was fitted for new front teeth!  Serious.  So I essentially have fake dentures for the next week.  I lost most of both my front teeth playing hockey as a kid and have always had caps on them.  I am upgrading to crowns!  Soon after waking I pack for this trip trying to go over all the gear I may need to be shooting in and around the water, dealing with the heat while packing as little as possible.  Less is more!

My flight headed for the Marsh Harbor airport in the pouring rain with word being that is was bad weather ahead.  As we approached the captain alerted all of us (6) that we may have to turn back.  That would some what screw up my plans!  Luckily they decided to land in the poor conditions.  The plane dove almost 90 degrees to turn into the runway trying to avoid a large storm cell.  That was a record for me and had my panties all balled up.  Phewww!  We made it.  Not my most softest flight.

My friend Darren picked me up and we drove to the docks to take his boat back to their island in the rain.  As you can imagine day one started out inside catching up on other projects and socializing with my friends where I am staying and enjoying a nice home cooked meal from Amelia.  Talking about island things and gossip is mandatory.

The sun peaked in just before it set as I was on a bike ride exploring and got a few snaps.  Hopefully tomorrow mother nature behaves!
